A typical gutter system shouldn’t make noises other than the splashing sound of rainwater as it makes its way to the downspouts. If your gutters are making thudding and clanging sounds, you may need to call a gutter professional like local general contractor 3JM Exteriors, Inc. In today’s post, we discuss the common causes of noisy gutters.

Clogged Gutters
Gutters need to be clear of dirt and debris to work properly. Rainwater should flow straight into the gutter troughs, and normally, all you should hear is water trickling. During a heavy downpour, the gutter hangers may make slight creaking noises. These are normal noises and you shouldn’t be concerned about them.
Clogged gutters, on the other hand, tend to make more noise. Large twigs, stones and other similar kinds of debris in the gutters may be agitated by rainwater as it flows, resulting in rattling or banging sounds. They may also scrape the caulk and coatings within the gutter troughs, which may expose the metal underneath to corrosion. If you hear such noises, make it a point to have your gutters cleaned as soon as possible. Clogged gutters may overflow, which may lead to unplanned siding and window replacement due to moisture damage.
Loose Gutter Hangers or Brackets
If properly installed, gutter hangers or brackets should be tight enough that there wouldn’t be room for vibration. Sometimes fasteners can come loose due to years of exposure to outdoor conditions. These loose parts can cause anything from scraping to loud banging noises during rainfall, which, like loose debris in clogged gutters, result in corrosion. Constant agitation may also result in gutter hangers or brackets falling off, which may lead to sagging gutters or sections falling to the ground. Make it a point to regularly inspect your gutters and tighten loose fasteners.
Improperly Aligned Downspouts
Similar to loose hangers and brackets, improper alignment can result in rattling and banging noises coming from the downspouts. Improperly-aligned downspout segments may also result in leaks that can lead to pooling water and damage to the house foundations. If this happens, call your gutter contractor as soon as possible.
